CONSTRUCTION & BUILDING SCIENCE
Construction is all around us. But you may be wondering, “How do I get started?”
There are many ways to get into the field of construction. Many high schools and community colleges offer career technical programs with several different construction aspects. You may enter into a co-op program with a certain construction company if your school offers that. Also, you may enter into an apprenticeship program that will train you for a specific skill in the field of construction.
Career Spotlight
Carpenter
Construct, erect, install, or repair structures and fixtures made of wood such as concrete forms; building frameworks, including partitions, joists, studying, and rafters; and wood stairways, window and door frames, and hardwood floors. You may also install cabinets, siding, drywall, and batt or roll insulation. This is one of the most versatile construction trades. Many carpenters are self-employed.
“The thing I like most about working in construction is seeing customers’ excitement during, and at the completion of their new home. It is the excitement of seeing a piece of dirt turn into their dream home.”
